Efficiency of Emission Reduction Technologies for Residential Biomass Combustion Appliances: Electrostatic Precipitator and Catalyst

Residential biomass combustion has been pointed out as one of the largest sources atmospheric pollutants. Rising awareness environmental effects residential emissions boosted development different emission reduction devices that are currently available on market for small-scale appliances. However, detailed studies efficiency these in systems Southern European countries lacking. In this study, two pollution control (catalytic converter and electrostatic precipitator) were tested (batch mode operated woodstove automatically fed pellet stove) order to assess potential devices. Pine firewood was used fuel woodstove. One commercial brand pellets an agricultural (olive pit) taken experiments stove. While precipitator reducing PM10 only recorded (29%), effect catalyst decreasing gaseous visible when applied stove flue gas. For wood combustion, reductions CO TOC range 60–62% 74–77%, respectively. olive pit a lower decrease 59–60% 64% emissions, respectively, recorded.
